North of England Open Air Museum
(Beamish)
In July the Club headed north for what proved to be a most enjoyable trip to the Beamish Museum. Many club members decided to make a full weekend. A sizeable number of us therefore booked into the exclusive Matfen Hall hotel near Newcastle. Having had time to sample the delights of the leisure centre and then the well stocked bar, we all assembled for an a banquet dinner in one of the hotels private dining rooms.

On the Sunday morning, one of our members from the North East, took us in a convoy from the hotel to the Beamish. We certainly created a stir as we passed through many small villages en route. A parade of a dozen XK8’s & XKR’s is not necessarily what you would expect to see as you go to buy the Sunday papers.

The Beamish Museum has won several prestigious awards. This open air museum recreates life in the North East in the early 1800’s and 1900’s. With the faithful recreation of the village along with the working tramway, wagon railway, farm, manor house, school and colliery it is history come alive before your eyes. The whole Beamish site had surprises around every corner and together with the knowledgeable staff, it made it a truly memorable club visit. Further information on the Beamish museum can be found at their official website : http://www.beamish.org.uk/
