3rd June 2007Shuttleworth Air Day (Bedfordshire)It was a beautiful sunny morning as Greame and Debbie in their XK8 and my Father and I in my XK8 drove in convoy up to the services to meet the other club members for the drive up to Biggleswade, Bedfordshire for the Shuttleworth air display. Tony Morley, (Klapka) had kindly organised everything including our own parking are for what would be quite a nice gathering of XKEC cars. We welcomed a new member Adam, (Hoggie), and his wife who were at their first meet. Once we had all arrived at the services Tony handed out a very nicely produced route and info pack. Once we had had the briefing the Guv’nor took the lead as we convoyed up the M25 then onto the A1M. On route we picked up NICPAY who we caught up with on the A1, which was a shame really as I thought I had got another spot to my tally, until I recognised the number plate, DUH!
On arrival to the Shuttleworth airfield we parked up in two lines within our designated area. We eventually had to expand this area as Tadpole, Joan, MIB and Jasper were running late with their party on the patio at Tapper Towers, Jonathon Tipler, another new member was also able to join us. Later this expansion would prove useful as we had a couple of impromptu guests who were appreciative of the parking space until they realised they were surrounded by other XK’s and were being “ganged up upon” sorry, encouraged, to join the club.
Once we were all parked up the usual tables, chairs and picnic rugs came out, along with boot loads of food and drink as everyone settled down for what turned out to be an extended breakfast/brunch/lunch as people grazed throughout the day. The airfield has a lovely museum which tells the story of the collection and the efforts taken to keep all the aircraft and motor vehicles in fully working condition. Most of the aircraft in the museum would be flying during the day. Thankfully the glorious weather stayed with us, this allowed many of the older aircraft to fly including a 1905 Cody, which looked like it had no business being in the air. A number of aircraft from other collections from around the country joined in the display and made for a great sight throughout the day. I would like to offer my thanks to Tony for organising this event.
